Grant County Online Death Search
Grant County has something most Indiana counties do not. They run an online death search database where you can look up death records from your computer. This is a big deal. Most counties in Indiana do not have any kind of online search tool for death records. If you want to check whether a record exists before you drive to the office or send a letter, this tool lets you do that.
The database lets you search by name. It pulls up basic info from the death index. Keep in mind that finding a record in the online search does not give you a certified copy. You still need to go through the proper request process for that. But it does confirm the record exists, which saves time and money if you were not sure. The search is free to use and open to the public. This is especially useful for genealogy work, where you might be searching for records across many counties and do not want to contact each one by mail first.

Indiana law controls who can receive a certified death certificate. Under IC 16-37-1-10, the Grant County office checks your identity and relationship before releasing a copy. You must have a direct tie to the deceased person.
People who qualify include parents, grandparents, siblings 18 or older, adult children and grandchildren, the current spouse, aunts, uncles, attorneys working on behalf of the family, and court-appointed guardians.
